SUNRISE, Fla. --
Local law enforcement agencies created a mock kidnapping to put the area's child abduction response team to the test.
Officials conducted the mock kidnapping at Markham Park in Sunrise, rolling out K-9 and other assets for the challenge. The goal was to determine how officers deal with a child abduction report.
The initiative is a statewide program, which can involve any police department. Thursdays exercise involved the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Miami-Dade police, Sunrise police and the Palm Beach County Sheriffs Office.
Police have used the strategy before to successfully rescue children, NBC 6s Steve Litz reported.
Sunrise police Lt. Brian Gerity said authorities couldnt train enough for a child abduction scenario.
I dont think you can put a price tag on it because you see the networking, the mutual aid response, I mean, we would bring everybody out, Gerity said.
The exercise, coordinated by the Child Abduction Response Team, started in Southwest Miami-Dade County with a report of a child being abducted from Tropical Park and the suspect is with the child driving north toward Broward County.
Since 2005, there have been three real child abduction incidents and all those kidnapped children were safely recovered.
Thursdays exercise was a success. The suspect was in police custody and the 13-year-old girl was located in a park.
It was an ending authorities said they hope for in every real life situation.
