ORLANDO, Fla. --
An Orlando Police Lieutenant was answering a robbery call when his unmarked SUV slammed into another car late Wednesday night.
Lieutenant Rich Ring was admitted into Orlando Regional Medical Center with non-life threating injuries early Thursday morning after he was involved in a traffic crash with another vehicle. According to the Orlando Police Department, Lt. Ring was in a 2008 Dodge Durango responding to a burglary in progress when a car making a left turn from Princeton Street to Orange Blossom Trail (see map) pulled out in front of him.
"The driver of the other car claims he had the green light and didn't see the flashing lights from Ring's SUV," said Lieutenant Connie Baldwin of the Orlando Police Department.
Investigators said the case was handed over to the traffic homicide unit. Emergency workers had to cut the roof off of Lieutenant Ring's undercover vehicle in order to get him out.
Ring's colleagues were frustrated because the victims of the burglary in the home he was responding to are not pressing charges. According to Investigators the suspect is an acquaintance.
"That is their business. We certainly can’t tell them whether or not to prosecute, but when an officer gets into an accident on the way there to try and help them out it is a little disconcerting for us," said Lieutenant Baldwin.
The other driver was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center. Police are not releasing his name.
