Florida sheriff's deputies are under investigation for allegedly scooping up nickels that fell out of an armored car in a fatal freeway accident, officials say.
Brevard County, Fla., Sheriff's Sgt. Linda Moros said an investigation is under way into the circumstances of the Sept. 17 mishap near Scottsmoor, Fla., in which an armored car en route to the Philadelphia U.S. Mint collided with a truck, killing a guard, WKMG-TV, Orlando, Fla., reported Wednesday.
"All we are allowed to say is that there is an active internal investigation going on that started on Sept. 26," Moros said. "The investigation was authorized by the sheriff and it was brought about internally."
A passing motorist on Interstate 95 was let off with a warning after being caught with $300 in freshly minted nickels which fell from the back of the overturned armored car, the station said.
