FITCHBURG -- Police are deploying a new cyber tool to fight crime.
The Fitchburg Police Department's Web site is now able to accept anonymous tips and crime reports from residents through an online tool, according to Chief Robert DeMoura.
"With a click of a button an e-mail opens up," DeMoura said.
The message includes space for the name and address of the respondent, but those fields can be left blank if anonymity is desired, according to DeMoura.
The message is sent directly to the officer in charge of the shift so police can be deployed quickly, according to DeMoura.
The new messaging system is being applauded by Fitchburg Mayor Lisa Wong. It will give the city a greater ability to track crime data and send resources where they are needed, she said.
"(It) will be another tool for tracking data to allow the city to manage limited resources more effectively," Wong said.
DeMoura and Wong are urging people to use the service once it goes live on the Web site later this month.
The online tool also gives police a chance to learn about important issues from residents as they happen, DeMoura said. "Very seldom you find a police department site that asks you to tell police officers who, what and where the issues that citizens face each and every day are," DeMoura said.
