SAN FRANCISO-City firefighters often drink at the firehouse during "cocktail hours" tolerated by their bosses, said one firefighter whoses claims have spawned investigations by the San Franciso Fire Department and the city.
Though the department has a zero-tolerance policy for drinking on duty, firefighter Kristen Odlaugh 39, said alcohol use was "prevalent" - and that it made life hard for anyone who refused to join in.
"Driving a big red truck around with sirens while drinking, I don't think anybody thinks that's a good idea," San Francisco Fire Department Chief Mario Trevino said Friday.

Thats the only statement the Fire Chief could say? wow!!!! If this was the police department officers would loose their jobs or at least suspensions would be issued. Amazing   :BM: :BM: Oh Ya Kristen Odlaugh uses the LA riot excuse that has become so widely used in California. I was caught up in the emotion of the situation I am not responsible for me own actions. LOL and they call us liberals here in Massachusetts? Hummm

Ok!!!! :BM: :BM: I have just about had it!!!   BHCCPD is right. if this was a PD suspensions or layoffs would be comming left and right Fox25 would b e doing an undercover investiagation as to why this is alllowed to happen. However because it seems to be a FD people at lest from the part of the paper published that people seem to mind. Hello!!!!!!!!!!   your house is on fire and a buch of S#@$%^!#$ or tipsy FF's rool up to your house and are going to be expected to save your family members. If I were the citizens San Fran. I would be up in arms and demanding that these FF's be held accountable.. With that said I'm not bashing on FF's at all, my bestfriend is FF and I know he has a tough job at times(don't we all :!: ), but I also know he wouldn't be stupid enough to drink and or get drunk/drugged on duty. With that said too I also think the any public safety offical should be held accountable for their actions if found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs if on duty. Any actions that result from their according charges should be applied. I also realize if someone needs help with a problem they should get it and hpoefully co-workers/supervisors would help get the individual the help the need.

On a side note and not to start rumors. Wasn't there something on TV about some Mass FF's be caught drinking on duty a while back?

Use a designated driver. The driver stays sober and all the other guys can be drunk. That way if they have a brush fire and the engines tank runs empty, the FF's can just piss the fires out.

Of course I am joking.

They (These SF FF's) are a disgrace to Public Safety.

You might want to get some more fact before throwing accusations around. Ms. Odlaugh has been speaking out AGAINST drinking on the job. She made her report to the brass as part of sexual harrasement complaints, which she states are the result of FF's drinking on duty.

I believe that Odlaugh is speaking out against the "cocktail hour" and drinking on duty. Yes -Odlaugh made the statements about alcohol use being "prevalent" - and how peer's made her feel uncomfortable about not drinking as part of her sexual harrasement claim with SFFD.

Odlaugh was not suspected of drinking on duty and was not making excuses about her own actions.

I have no comments on the years 1989 to 1996. Those were hazy times my friends. It was prevalent amongst a large bunch of hard chargers where I worked at the time. We used to go on vacation to get sober!

The guys I worked with worked hard & played even harder. We all did the "Choir Boys" routine for a number of years but it never got in the way & the job was always done. We were all young and stupid then, now I am just older & still stupid. Insert joke here _____________. C'mon, take your best shots.

I do not condone it now or then but I cannot criticize it as well. I am not an ex-smoker or ex-drinker or a 12 stepper. I know how they can be, spreading the WORD. I am not a hypocrite either. I know it happens even in todays litigenous society. I just choose not partake anymore.

I don't want to even talk about some of the "Foundation Savers" I have found out there who are supposed to be at the House awaiting the next call. I am a firm believer in "Idle hands make the Devil's work" When they aren't fighting fires, maybe they should be out there painting curbs or hydrants!

D'oh, #-o isn't that a DPW job????

No, you DIDN'T post the article. All you did was read it, spin it, and fill in the blanks with what you wanted so that it you had someone you could hold responsible. NOWHERE in the article does it state that this woman was breaking the rules because of peer pressure ("caught in the emotion"), drinking, or making excuses for actions. All the article does is state that she believes on Dud drinking is "prevalent" in her department. YOU made the leap from that statement to the conclusion that she was one of those participating. Jumping to conclusions like that is dangerous and it's how rumors get started - and in this case, it turns out, it's very unfair to Ms. Odlaugh.

After reading FSCPD's post and your conclusions, I was curious how you had jumped to that conclusion, so I CHECKED. That's how I found the information about her sexual harassment case that she feels was caused by coworkers drinking on duty (as I posted previously). Nothing more, nothing less than what the articles state.

Sorry to sound :BM: about this, but it bothers me a bit when people jump to their own conclusions with incorrect information.

I've been told by some of the very few remaining troopers who lived in the barracks system up to 1972 that if you didn't drink like a fish, you were an outsider. If you can imagine a bunch of guys living together like brothers, day and night, facing all the uncertainties the job brings, it's no wonder they partook of the drink. The days of the hard drinking, cigar chomping, card playing, womanizer on the state police are still around. You just have to look a lot harder. rhl
