Authorities remove 280 plants by Neponset River

CANTON -
Police and federal agents seized about $280,000 worth of marijuana plants growing along the Neponset River in Canton and Norwood, Drug Enforcement Administration officials said.
"That's a lot of money. ... Whoever planted them is going to face some economic impact if not arrest," DEA New England spokesman Tony Pettigrew said. "These investigations do continue."
The DEA uses helicopter surveillance units during the summer growing months to look for illegal drugs. One of those units spotted a marijuana field about 11 a.m. Tuesday. More clumps of marijuana plants were spotted nearby on Wednesday. Federal agents along with State and local police removed the plants - about 280 in all - Tuesday and Wednesday.
The DEA values each marijuana plant at $1,000, regardless of size. Police also found growing equipment, including timers for watering, shovels and fertilizer.
Pettigrew said no arrests have been made.
He added that large crops of illegal drugs planted on public land are often outfitted with booby traps by the growers to ward off police or thieves. But there were no traps set in the Canton and Norwood fields, he said.
The National Guard, State Police and Canton and Norwood police worked with the DEA on the case.
