SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a 21-year-old murder suspect who was shot during an arrest attempt by U.S. federal agents.
The suspect, Jimmy Abel Rodriguez, died after he was shot twice when agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms tried to arrest him in a poor neighborhood of San Juan on warrants for one murder in New York and three in Puerto Rico.
Authorities declined to provide details about the incident, including what prompted the shooting and whether the suspect was armed. The FBI and Puerto Rican police said they were investigating.
"Based on preliminary information of what occurred it's being investigated as a possible attack on a federal agent," said Agent Harry Rodriguez, a spokesman for the FBI in San Juan.
The head of the ATF in San Juan, Marcial Orlando Felix, defended the decision to try to arrest the suspect immediately. "We are talking about a violent person, not someone you want playing with your kids," he said in an interview.
Authorities declined to provide details about the suspect's alleged crimes in Puerto Rico and New York.
The death of the suspect came only days after a Puerto Rican police officer was shot and killed during an FBI-led raid against an alleged gang of kidnappers. Authorities were trying to determine if an FBI agent fired the shots that killed the officer.
