NORTH BERWICK, Maine — Several FBI agents raided a Maple Street home belonging to a registered sex offender on Thursday morning and arrested a man on child pornography charges.

The man, who one neighbor said had been living at the home for the summer, was identified by a U.S. District Court official as Dennis Gallipeau.

At about 4:20 p.m., Gallipeau appeared at U.S. District Court in Portland for an appointment of counsel hearing. More information on Gallipeau's background and the exact nature of the charges was not available Thursday because his hearing was still in session when the court clerk's office closed at 5 p.m.

Documents related to cases of this nature are unsealed after appointment of counsel hearings, according to FBI spokesperson Gail Marcinkiewicz.

At about 8 a.m. earlier in the day, three unmarked sports utility vehicles converged on 62 Maple St. and four FBI agents clad in bulletproof vests and jackets reading "FBI" on the back jumped out of their vehicles, drew their weapons, and surrounded the house, according to one neighbor who said she was about to mow her front lawn at the time.

The neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said one agent banged on the front door of the white and green-trimmed mobile home and shouted he had a search warrant.

"I didn't move. I just sat there and watched," the neighbor said.

Three men that were inside the home were all brought out to the front lawn, and agents began removing computers and videotapes from inside, the neighbor said.

According to town records, the owners of the mobile home are Dan and John Sullivan. The neighbor said Dan Sullivan was one of the men brought out onto the front lawn.

In 2001, Sullivan, 53, was convicted of visual sexual aggression against a child under the age of 14 years old, according to the state's sex offender registry.

The neighbor said Gallipeau had been living with Sullivan since the summer began. She estimated Gallipeau was in his 20s.

She said she did not know Sullivan well, and said he and his visitors mostly kept to themselves.

It was not immediately clear where Gallipeau was being held Thursday night.

During the raid, three North Berwick police officers and a Boston-based U.S. Postal Inspector assisted the FBI agents.

The home is located about a quarter-mile from Route 4 near the downtown village area.
