FITCHBURG -- A Fitchburg man whose 8-month-old child allegedly tested positive for cocaine in May, was arraigned in Fitchburg District Court Thursday on reckless endangerment charges.
Richard Burtt Jr., 33, of 38 Intervale Road, is charged with reckless endangerment of a child.
The child's mother, Laura Baum, 22, of 38 Intervale Road, is currently being held in Framingham State Prison and will be brought to court in September to be arraigned on the reckless endangerment charge.
Police were summoned to 38 Intervale Road in May as the Department of Social Services was taking custody of the child, according to a report from Officer Michael Sevigny. Baum and Burtt were both arrested on warrants.
The following day an assistant district attorney contacted Sevigny and told him the child had tested positive for cocaine, according to the police report.
Because the victim is lactose intolerant and cannot crawl, officers suspect the cocaine was given to the child by a caretaker, Sevigny states in the report.
Both Baum and Burtt are known drug users according to the police report. Burtt was released on personal recognizance bail Thursday. The couple is due back in court on Sept. 9
