Fairhaven police arrested a New Bedford man for possession of heroin Tuesday night after a traffic stop, police said.
Stephen Martin, 36, of 1544 Philips Road, New Bedford, was stopped by officer Stephen Gwozdz for speeding and driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle on Route 6 in the vicinity of Holcomb Street, police said.
When Officer Gwozdz approached the green Jeep Mr. Martin was driving, Mr. Martin got out of the car and was seen placing something in his pants pocket, police said.
When questioned, Mr. Martin denied putting anything in his pocket. Officer Gwozdz frisked Mr. Martin and found a plastic pill bottle containing cash and a bag of heroin in his pants pocket, police said.
Mr. Martin was arrested and brought to Fairhaven Police headquarters where police found $700 and 30 bags of heroin "packed for retail sale," after searching his clothes, Fairhaven Police Chief Gary Souza said.
Police estimated the value of the heroin at about $300, Chief Souza said. He added that Fairhaven Police have seen their share of heroin in town recently.
"Heroin has become the drug of choice," because of its availability and cost, Chief Souza said.
Mr. Martin is held at the New Bedford House of Corrections for arraignment this morning at New Bedford District Court. He's charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute, possession of heroin with intent to distribute within a school zone and various motor vehicle charges, police said.
