VT. Police believe a prison escapee is desperate for cash and may be responsible for a robbery earlier this week.
Monday night, a man entered the Champlain Farms store at the corner of Williston Road and Airport Drive in South Burlington. The robber went behind the counter, grabbed the female clerk and forced her to open the cash register. He grabbed money and took off.
Police have identified the robber as Richard Barnier, 42. He was serving time at the South Burlington jail, but was let out on a work search permit last Friday and didn't come back. Barnier has been charged in the past with violent crimes using a knife and he is considered dangerous. If you see Barnier, do not approach him; call police immediately. A reward is being offered for information that leads to his whereabouts and capture. If you have information on Richard Barnier call South Burlington Police or Crimestoppers.

INSPECTOR'S NOTE: Gee who would have thought a prisoner considered dangerous and having past charges of violent crime with a knife wouldn't come back to jail from work?

Escapee captured in Burlington

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Burlington Police say they have captured an escaped inmate who they believe held up a convenience store.
Authorities say 42-year-old Richard "Tony" Barnier was arrested at 4 a.m. Saturday in an abandoned building in Burlington after police received a tip.
Police say they are looking into whether Barnier, whose record includes charges of violent crimes, was involved in two attacks on women in Burlington this week but say they don't have any information linking him to the crimes.
Barnier failed to return to the South Burlington jail after leaving on a work-search pass on Nov. 7.
Police say he has been identified on a surveillance video as the man who robbed a Champlain Farms convenience store on Williston Road on Monday.
