Can anyone point me to the MGL ch/s in regards to the display and use of emergency lights such as red/clear/green on a non-police vehicle? Similarly does a permit need to be obtained if the user is a "private security" officer?
Thanks. :x

MGL Ch 90 sec 7E and 7I for red and blue lights.

I believe there are MGL's and/or CMR's covering flashing white and amber but they escape me at the moment.

There was rumor during the budget crisis that the RMV was going to issue amber light permits for a fee... but currently I don't believe any exist.

Why did it blow your mind :?: Maybe he had the proper permit from his state. The guy was probably just visiting. NY plates, w/a blue light, and Volunteer Firefighter placard..... big deal. What concerns me is "private security" driving around with flashing colored lights, as posted in a previous question. What would be the reason for private security to use flashing lights. :-k Motor vehicle stops perhaps :-s Rapid response to emergency calls at high rate of speeds :-k

Nothing looks sharper than a private security cruiser driving around with green and white lights.

Here we go again.

For some reason and I cant understand why but so many people are so concerned with who has red lights blue lights green lights purple lights yellow lights and who shouldnt have these lights. Are they that bored on there jobs that theres nothing else to do but worry about what the other guys is doing especially when its not in there job description to be even remotley concerned about it?

I swear I would love to know how old some people are that post here, HMMM I wonder, becuase non of us really know, but judging by the some of the topics and questions I really wonder.

In closing WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! who has purple, red, blue or what ever color lights. I bet theres a few on this board that go to bed with there uniform on  . OMG I cant believe some of the Tackberrys on this board. :BM:

 I've noticed that there have been many posts on people inquiring about "blue/red/green/white/amber flashing lights" on masscops. Somehow that topic always seems to be brought up, whether about someone volunteer ff with a light displayed on his dash, or someone who wants to put blue or green lights on their personal car or something. What is up with the fascination with flashing lights #-o If I saw some Volunteer FF or EMT with lights signs, stickers and antennas all over their car that might be the last vehicle on the road I'd be concerned about.

Just seems to me there is a big fascination with flashing/rotating lights on this board. :FT:

I don't get it

OK my turn to chime in

How about headlight modulators on motorcycles? I got one one my bike and every time I ride by a brother in blue I find myself turning the modulator off. The modulators are DOT approved but I don't have the time to get pulled over and have to explain to the officer it's a safety feature and I am really not a big time sparky.

It's funny that if a a guy drives around with a tiny red or blue light on a valve stem or winshield wiper and an officer will chase him down like he just robbed the local bank. But, guys ride by all day on motorcycles with almost no helmet on and most officers hardly notice.

imho

Are you SURE it's just some volunteer FF? Or is it a nutjob who pulls over women and "searches" them? Or is it a freak that goes 100 mph to a minor accident without P/I? I've dealt with more than my share of volunteer FF/Police. Most of them are good guys who do a good job. Some are SCARY. If you see a guy driving around with red/blue lights displayed, it doesn't hurt to check them out.

Key word here being A flashing or rotating light.

I personally think those valve cap lights or those under carrage neon lights or the windshield washer lights are so foolish #1.) they look ridiculious#2.) they distract the shit out of people ( not that talking on a cell phone is any better).

and they usually accompany the low riding honda civics( or I should say just about any car these's days) with no springs so it bounces all over the place and an exhaust pipe you could fit your head in, and they make more noise than Led Zepplin.

There so abundant now a days an officer could fill his day stopping and writing V's and towing these things and still not even make a dent.

P.S. I hope I didnt insult anyone on this board who owns a car like in my description. Oh well to each his own I guess.

Yes, and they are ILLEGAL.
Write them under 90-16 for the exhaust. 540 cmr's cover the clear tail lenses and the neon lights/undercarriage.
90-7P and a tow for the cut springs/lowered vehicles.
90-6/540's for the neon license plate.
540 cmr 4.04 for the "dark" headlight covers and 90-6 for the license plate covers.
I could care less if anyone "likes" them; put the car in a show. They don't belong on the roads. I have had many "ricers" tell me "it's a show car!"... I have had many motorists thank me and bitch about the god awful noise these POS's make as they blast down the road. Your hobby is fine until it starts to infringe on my life. :BM:

jsg2020, I'm not saying DON't stop someone b/c of displaying a light. One can do thier job as they see fit for the circumstances, use your discretion. I can't say I have stopped anyone for displaying a light to date. If you want to stop every car with a light thats ones own discretion and all the power to ya. All the local fire guys in my town, half of them you know who they are, secondly most of those type of volunteer/call firefighters usually have stickers or plates on thier vehicles, usually from surrounding towns. I mean if I saw Job Blow fireman driving down the road in his Chevy Pickup with a fire sticker on it and a red light mounted on the dash, I can't say I would stop him because of that. If I knew there wasnt a fire in town and saw someone with a light cruising around town that would be a different story. You are also right, some of those guys are scary. They drive 100 mph, passing cars just to get to a non life threatening call. We've had our share of those people. And if you have someone with a light where something just doesnt look right then fine.
My only comment to this thread was that out of all the CMVIs that are there, the displaying a red light seems to always be a hot topic on this board. I would think that out of all the CMVIs this would be one that you deal with least. I'm just saying seems like there is alot of fascination with people who have a light or people who want to put lights on thier cars. It still is another tool we have to stop a mv, so I wouldn't say don't be concerned with someone with a light, you just use your own discretion. Its the wanna be cops out there who buy the used crown vics and cruise around with all sorts of lights and antennas that concern me.

In regards to Hunter and jsg2020, I would agree with you guys. Those people who put all sorts of aftermarket lights and exhaust is running ramped. They are just screaming pull me over. Then they wonder why they get pulled over. If you want a car show car, put it in a car show, not the local highway. I see it all the time, usually a honda of some type, no front plate, huge/loud aftermarket exhaust, lowered, neon lights and tinted windows. If you don't want to get stopped, dont do things that will get you stopped. Common sense... but I know there isn't much common sense out there so I guess its excusable :) I always hear the excuse, "well it passed inspection". I know I am annoyed when I hear some car going down the road waking the whole neighborhood with an excessively loud exhaust. Who wants to listen to that, just because some kid thinks his car is cool. I find alot of people now who have a DVD player in thier car, up in the front drivers area, is that really necessary?

If they claim it passed inspection, forward the vehicle's info to the Registry Hearings Officer. He can schedule the vehicle for a compliance hearing. If they don't fix the deficiencies, the vehicle's reg is suspended. They will also go after the shop that passed the car.

masstroopers1,
yes those who find it necessary to drive with the DVD player had recieved the cite for their impeded operation. It seems to be the new "thing". I have written three people within two weeks for 90-13, to wit DVD. Apparently people find it necessary to watch DVDs while they drive down the road.

And the you gotta love love the people who drive around (especially in Boston on weekend nights) with DVD screens in the rear headrests playing movies with there tinted windows down so the whole world can see how cool they are,w/ there pimped out rides.I'm sure some of you have seen what I'm talking about the SUV'S with 4 -6 headrest DVD screens in them with the 20' chrome rims and loud enough music to rattle your license plate nevermind there own.

Sure there cool items I guess, but cmon now really does the general public really need another distraction?

For example: "oh look honey that guys has TV screens in his car I wonder why hes playing a movie and no-one is in the back seat we should get those for the kids ?, Oh no!!! look out eeeerrrrrrrr, aaaahhhh BOOOOOOOM ( major MVA) and the occupants and the other party end up in the hosp (or worse dead).

I understand DVD players/screens are a nice thing to have (especially for those who have kids). And I know I exagerated the story however is I with you GPD on the comonsense isssue, some people have most jack ass's dont.

Wow, I just read my post and I sound like and fart bitching and complaining,LOL :L: Dam I need to get out of the city,LOL.just kidding.
