LOWELL -- An 85-year-old man and his 81-year-old wife were terrorized by a gun-wielding man who got into the back of their car as they left a Methuen grocery store yesterday and then forced them at gunpoint to drive him to Lowell.
Police did not learn of the carjacking until after the man had the couple, who live in Lawrence, drop him off near Route 110 and Bridge Street in Lowell.
The couple, who were said to be terrified, then saw a Lowell officer on a traffic detail near the Hunts Falls Rotary and flagged him down about 4:05 p.m.
Police said the couple had been shopping at Market Basket on Haverhill Street in Methuen and had just gotten into their black Toyota Camry when the suspect got into the back seat and pulled a gun.
He demanded that the couple drive him to Lowell. As the couple drove, the man went through the woman's purse, taking several items police did not describe.
The suspect was described as a white male, in his 30s, with very blue eyes. He wore a black stocking cap.
The couple was not physically harmed.
