EAST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - East Haven officials have begun a hearing to determine whether Police Chief Leonard Gallo should be fired for removing disciplinary records from several officers' personnel files.
Mayor April Capone Almon presided over Wednesday's hearing but called a recess after a few minutes because Gallo followed his lawyer's advice and didn't show up. Capone Almon says the matter will proceed on Oct. 3 with or without Gallo present.
Gallo told police commissioners last month that he wasn't 100% sure that he didn't violate the state's records retention law when he removed the records from the officers' files.
Gallo has called the pre-termination hearing a "total overreaction" and a "political witch hunt."
