I keep my spare 3/4-length rain coat and rain cover rolled up in my bag. During the winter months, I add a Polartech fleece jacket to the mix. It doesn't take up much room when it is packed correctly and it becomes a hot item when you get stuck out at an accident scene at 2AM.

A portable DVD player doesn't hurt either!

Some other items I carry in my duty bag besides the already mentioned:

Plastic bags, paper bags (drug/evidence collection), road chalk/ spray paint, department forms, tape measure, disposable camera, extra handcuffs, calculator… that’s all I can think of right now… I’ll look in my bag tonight and see if I forgot anything!

You guys sound like your ready to survive in the woods for months. I used to carry a lot of stuff, but I recently narrowed it down to stuff I used. One important thing is a large clipboard folder with all the department fors I might need out there, missing persons form, towed MV, consent to search, Emergency RO, Tresspass, and many more.

Hey SPDFITZ, What about all the scratch tickets you buy every day. Do you keep those in your bag :p :p

You forgot to include Potassium Iodide tabs. To prevent your body from absorbing radiation in case of a dirty bomb.

I have a briefcase sholder strap type bag and this is what is in it:

Reflective vest, 1/2" ring binder with town maps and other forms, citation book, black and decker tool kit ([email protected] home depot), english-spanish dictionary, 1 chain cuffs, 1 hinge cuffs, 1 leg irons, medical gloves( in 35mm camera film case), Small MV Law index book($15 any police supply store), digital camera( personal one), Extra search gloves, Snacks(gum, pb crackers, powerbar), extra pens, 2 extra mags, and an extra knife.

It sounds like alot but it actually fits quite well into it bought it from Gall's.

A new duty bag is approximately $50.00. Make a pinch at the end of your shift to pay for it. Even though it is a write-off, don't go crazy, it's just a gear bag.
