Police Say They Recognized Driver

BOSTON -- A Quincy man was arrested Friday after he allegedly struck several vehicles, fled the scene of the incident, and then attempted to report that his car had been stolen.

At about 11:05 p.m., officers allegedly spotted Marlon Pontes, 24, speeding down Dudley Street in Roxbury in a vehicle with significant damage. They pursued the vehicle and found it unoccupied in a nearby alleyway.

Pontes allegedly walked into the police station shortly thereafter and said that his car had been stolen. The officers, who returned to question Pontes, recognized him as the man they had seen driving the car and arrested him.
Witnesses said that Pontes' vehicle had been involved in an incident in the area of Fox Street earlier on Friday.

Pontes was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and driving to endanger. He was also accused of driving under the influence of alcohol, although it is unclear whether the charge applies to the collision or the developments later in the evening.
