DETROIT - A Detroit police sergeant used his knowledge of Detroit to thwart a plot to sell stolen goods on eBay.
After a theft of about $25,000 worth of surveying equipment on the city's east side, Sgt. Jeffrey Wenturine browsed eBay in search of the stolen goods.
He found them but the seller indicated he lived in Dallas. Wenturine didn't buy it - the background scene looked too much like Detroit.
"There was a picture of the equipment and in the background was a unique, white picket fence," Sgt. Erin Stephens-Bell said. "The median also looked very familiar to him."
Wenturine drove up and down East Outer Drive until he spotted the fence.
Around 1:30 p.m. today, officers barged into the home on the 9300 block of East Outer Drive and recovered the stolen equipment along with about eight guns, Stephens-Bell said.
The suspect, who is in his 50s, was taken into custody.
"This was just fabulous police work," Stephens-Bell said.
