BILLERICA -- A police sergeant working a paid detail for some tree trimmers cut short the attempted escape of a 47-year-old Billerica man who was spotted committing a break-in Monday afternoon, police said.
A resident at 5 Fenner St., called 911 about 1 p.m., and told police he was watching a man smash the lock and break in to the shed in his backyard, police said.
The suspect fled as officers arrived, and initially eluded police until Sgt. Steve Elmore, working a detail along Middlesex Turnpike, spotted the man running through the parking lot of 512 Middlesex Turnpike, police said.
Elmore told dispatchers where the suspect was, and soon officers Paul Brady, Robert Moran and Donald Boulette arrived and arrested Philip Laverriere, of Billerica, inside a nearby store, police said.
Laverriere was charged with breaking and entering daytime and malicious destruction of property under $250, police said.

I thought cops on details only drink coffee and talk on their cell phone????
Nice job assisting in the pinch!
