A retired cop on a traffic detail yesterday was struck by a car driving the wrong way on a detour road, police said.
Michael Degnan, who retired last year, suffered neck and arm injuries after he was hit by a sedan as he directed traffic at Potter Road and Elmfield Road at 8:05 a.m., said police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany.
Degnan, designated a traffic constable by Chief Steven Carl, was authorized to work details in the same capacity as a police officer.
He was directing traffic at a road construction site, with Elmfield Road detoured as an one-way road westbound, when a woman drove the wrong way toward him, police said.
"The woman was not able to see him due to the solar glare," Shastany said. "He (Degnan) was frantically trying to get her to stop, but she hit a traffic barrel and then collided with him."
Degnan went to the ground, but quickly got back up.
"His first concern was to get back up and direct traffic so it wouldn't happen again," Shastany said.
Degnan, who was repeatedly stabbed during an on-duty incident on Jan. 7, 2005, was taken to MetroWest Medical Center's Framingham Union campus where he was treated and released.
The accident was under investigation and the driver had not been cited as of yesterday.
