A veteran Atlanta police detective was killed early Friday when his car was struck head-on by another vehicle in south Fulton County.
The driver of the second car also was killed in the crash, Fulton County police spokeswoman Kay Lester said.
Lester said a Ford Focus headed eastbound on Campbellton Road about 12:20 a.m. crossed the center line east of Stonewall Tell Road and hit an oncoming Ford Crown Victoria, killing both drivers.
Atlanta police Sgt. Darrell D. Johnson, 42, of College Park, was driving the Crown Victoria, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office.
The Focus driver was identified as Brent E. Jacobs, 21, of Douglasville.
Atlanta police spokesman Ronald Campbell said Johnson had worked as an Atlanta police officer for 18 years, and was assigned to the criminal investigation division. Johnson was married and had children, Campbell said, but Campbell did not know the ages of the children.
Johnson was on his way home from work when he was killed, Campbell said.
The crash happened about two miles inside Fulton County from Douglas County. Lester said the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is involved in the investigation, but would not say whether the Focus was being pursued by deputies.
Alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash, Lester said.
