    Job Summary (Overview)

    The Deputy Chief/Support Services serves as second-in-command to the Director Public Safety and has command responsibility over all other members of the campus police department. In conjunction with RISD's Director/Chief of Public Safety, the Deputy plans, assigns, administers, and supervises the activities of the department's safety and security operations and plans including but not limited to the institution and maintenance of standard operating procedures which support RISD mission and are in compliance with city, state and federal legislation; developing community educational and department training programs; detective operations; crime prevention safety; emergency management; and conducting and supervising investigations in an effective and sensitive manner.

    This position is responsible for hiring, training, developing, evaluating, and supervising public safety support service staff, including facility monitors, dispatchers, and ARMS coordinator (s). Oversee records, budgets, and departmental expenditures. Ensure Institutional compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

    This position works closely with a variety of campus offices, such as the Dean of Students Affairs, the Office of Residence Life, and Facilities + EHS. Must have a strong working knowledge of and sensitivity to Title IX incidents and serve as the point of contact for these investigations.

    Job Qualifications Required
    • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
    • Campus policing or campus public safety or proven community policing experience required.
    • A minimum of five years command level supervisory experience.
    • Thorough knowledge of modern police methods, practices and techniques and of applicable federal and state laws.
    • Sworn peace officer in the state of RI or ability to obtain sworn status from P.O.S.T. Commission within a prescribed period of time.
    • Experience with Community Policing Model.
    • Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices of police administration and of the functions and objectives of other state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies.
    • Ability to analyze complex police problems.
    • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and direct the work of subordinates and to advise, instruct, and train personnel.
    • Ability to write and speak effectively.
    • Ability to interact with the public and the RISD campus community firmly and courteously and to establish effective working relationships.
    Job Qualifications Preferred
    • Active Rhode Island EMT license preferred.
