Duties:
1. Patrols assigned campus buildings and adjacent areas on foot or in a patrol vehicle to ensure the security of the buildings or grounds at institutions or higher education or at mental health mental retardation or public health facilities.

2. Guards against trespass, theft, damage to property, or injury to individuals by screening visitors, controlling crowds; providing personal protection as required; conducting surveillance of high crime areas; searching for missing goods and persons; investigating complaints and reports of suspicious activity, mediating disputes and inspecting, grounds, fire lanes, and emergency exits for compliance with safety standards to ensure campus security.

3. Exercise police powers by making arrests, searching prisoners, patients, or clients, restraining violent persons, transporting persons under restraints, and advising suspects of their constitutional rights.

4. Enforces laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as well as the rules and regulations of the hospital; investigates crimes and suspicious fires by interviewing witnesses, victims, and others, preserves crime scene and fire sites for examination by experts, collects physical evidence to aid in locating and apprehending suspects; and in preparing cases for prosecution.

5. Assists the courts or grand juries by serving summonses and warrants; presenting evidence, testifying as a witness; reporting case developments; and arranging for the appearance of witnesses to provide information necessary for the prosecution of a case.

6. Enforces campus traffic and safety regulations by directing traffic; assisting operators of disabled motor vehicles; assisting pedestrians in crossing streets, and writing traffic tickets.

7. Operates such equipment as two-way radios or receivers, base stations, public address systems, emergency medical equipment and office machines.

8. Provides security at Shelter for homeless as needed.

9. Provides security services for Shattuck Hospital Correction Unit in emergency situations, when requested by Superintendent of Shattuck Hospital Correction Unit.

10. Drives motor vehicles for the transportation of patients, Hospital staff, visitors and materials in emergency situations.

11. Performs police duties, such as cooperating and sharing information with other agencies, notifying designated personnel of emergency; writing reports, such as activity reports, daily logs, investigate reports and stolen vehicle recovery reports; maintaining records on lost and found items, criminal records and files on known criminals; assisting in fire fighting operations; administering first aid o injured persons; and raising and lowering flags.

12. Assisting in the search for lost or escaped patients on the hospital grounds and the return of patients to their assigned hospital areas.

Qualifications:
Minimum Entrance Requirements: None.

Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Appointee must be eligible for appointment as a special police officer under Chapter 147 of the Massachusetts General Laws.

6. Knowledge of proper telephone procedures for making and receiving agency calls.

7. Knowledge of rescue methods used in fire fighting.

8. Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing arrest, search and seizure.

9. Skill in using fire fighting apparatus such as extinguishers, etc.

10. Knowledge of the types and symptoms of mental and/or emotional disorders.

11. Knowledge of the terminology used in police work.

12. Knowledge of the methods of general report writing.

13. Knowledge of the types and application of emergency medical procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

14. Knowledge of the types and uses of fire protection equipment such as fire alarms and sprinkler systems.

15. Knowledge of the terminology, codes and standard abbreviations used in connection with radio communications.

16. Knowledge of the methods and procedures followed in the security of buildings and property.

17. Knowledge of the standard methods and techniques of crowd management and riot control.

18. Knowledge of the types and uses of devices used in restraining prisoners.

Comments:
This is a civil service position. If there is no civil service list for this title, employees appointed must take and pass the next Civil Service examination when administered.
All employees are paid biweekly and must have direct deposit. ?As applicable, preference for this position will be given to those candidates who are eligible for Civil Service/Con Test Reinstatement/Reemployment or to those candidates who have passed the civil service examination for this job title, and who respond to the job certification that was recently issued for this location? and/or to employees laid off or bumped from this title who are eligible for recall, and in accordance with Article 14 or applicable Collective bargaining requirements.
