Deadly Shootout Sends Three KY Officers To Hospital
The Associated Press

EDMONTON, Ky.- Three police officers wounded by gunfire killed a suspect and injured another as the officers were serving warrants at a home in Metcalfe County.

None of the officers sustained life-threatening injuries in the shootings that occurred Tuesday after 3 p.m. CDT.

Two of the officers were listed in fair condition Wednesday morning at University Hospital, and the other had been released, said state police spokesman Trooper Dwaine Barnett.

The injured suspect, 82-year-old Albert Coomer, was in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. He had not been charged Wednesday morning, Barnett said.

Police arrived at the home five miles east of Edmonton on Kentucky 544 to serve Barren County arrest warrants to James Allen Coomer, 43. Coomer was wanted for assault, burglary and violation of a domestic violence order.

As police arrived, Coomer fled the house with a rifle and fired at the officers, striking Kentucky State Trooper Andy Olson in his left arm, said Capt. Lisa Rudzinski, a state police spokeswoman.

The officers returned fire and fatally wounded Coomer. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:35 p.m. CDT, Rudzinski said.

As Edmonton Police Chief Tony Harris arrived at the home, Coomer's father, Albert Coomer, emerged and fired at the officers, hitting Harris and Metcalfe County Deputy Sheriff Kevin Thompson.

Harris was hit by a bullet in his right arm and Thompson sustained an injury to his head, a statement from state police said.

Harris was released from the hospital Tuesday night and Olson and Thompson were expected to be released Wednesday, Barnett said.
