Job Description / Responsibilities
The City of Daytona Beach Shores is a small beachside community located on the barrier island just south of Daytona Beach, Florida. With 4,500 full-time residents and a daily population of approximately 12,000 the city experiences a series of "special events" throughout the year causing large fluctuation in population and activity. These events include bike week, race weeks, spring break, black college reunion and "biketoberfest." Due to the nature of the area and population fluctuation the Fire and Police services are merged to better meet the needs of our community.

A Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety Officer (PSO) is required to serve as a law enforcement officer, firefighter/EMT or firefighter/paramedic during his 12-hour shift. Officers respond to police, fire, and medical calls while on patrol, shortening our response times and providing an extremely flexible response.

Applicants with a law enforcement certification or a duel firefighter/EMT certification will be considered. Individuals with all three certifications are preferred. Each applicant will be expected to complete the necessary schools for triple certification within one year of employment. The City of Daytona Beach Shores will pay all costs and regular hourly wage while the employee attends the necessary schools.

Minimum Qualifications
Florida State Statute 943.13 and 633.351 defines the minimum qualifications for employment as a Public Safety Officer in the State of Florida. The requirements for a Public Safety Officer in the City of Daytona Beach Shores are as follows:

• Be at least 19 years of age.

• Be a citizen of the United States,

• At least a high school graduate or GED (USAFI is not acceptable) and completion of a basic training course as prescribed by the Criminal Justice Standards & Training
Commission or a basic training course prescribed by the State of Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training or certified paramedic as approved by the Bureau of
Emergency Medical Services.

• Not have been convicted of any felony or
misdemeanor involving perjury or moral
turpitude. Must be of good moral character.

• If a veteran, must have received other than a
dishonorable or undesirable discharge.

• Must satisfactorily pass a medical exam,
which includes corrected visual acuity.

Physical agility test

All phases of the selection process will be scored, evaluated, reviewed and revised in a fair, impartial, uniform manner subject to applicable Civil Service Guidelines.

Salary and Benefits
(Representing the current benefit levels for entry level Public Safety Officers. Benefits are subject to change.)

Salary
Public Safety Officer I (Police Officer or Firefighter/EMT): 14.04 per hour ($30,663)

Public Safety Officer II (Firefighter/Paramedic): 14.88 per hour ($32,947)

Public Safety Officer III (Police/Firefighter/EMT): 15.78 per hour ($34,462)

Public Safety Officer IV (Police/Firefighter/Paramedic) 16.72 per hour ($36,516)

Salaries increase with each advancement in PSO level.

2.5% merit raise on anniversary date and additional salary adjustments based on the consumer price index as of October 1st.

Sick Leave
8.5 hours per month

Vacation
126 hours per year for starting employees, subject to increase with longetivity.

Holidays
9 paid per year.

Continuing Education:
The City of Daytona Beach Shores pays tuition and salary for employees attending the necessary classes to gain and maintain triple certification (Police/Firefighter/EMT). The city will also provide tuition reimbursement for up to $1,000 per year towards department approved college degree programs.

Retirement:
A municipal pension requiring 25 years of service or the attainment of 55 years of age. Employees vest at 10 years or service. Pension is accrued at a rate of 3% per year of service. The pension also has a built in C.O.L.A. of 3% per year after retirement. Employees currently pay 4.5% of salary towards their pension.

State Educational Incentives:
2-year degree: $30.00 additional monthly
4-year degree: $80.00 additional monthly
