Police say a Dorchester man brandishing a loaded .45-caliber semiautomatic grabbed a bystander to use as a human shield to keep cops from taking a clear shot at him during a tense standoff in Grove Hall late Saturday night.
Jason Aparicio, 23, was arrested shortly before 11 p.m. after briefly escaping in a 2005 Nissan Altima he carjacked but had to abandon near Oldfields Road because its front axle was broken, police said.
Aparicio jammed the gun into a person's rib cage as two Boston police officers and a Department of Youth Services special investigator advanced on him with weapons drawn, yelling, "Drop the gun," police said. That person was not identified and vanished into the night.
Aparicio, who officers said was "driving very fast, weaving in and out of traffic with no regard for anyone but himself," will be arraigned today on charges that include armed carjacking, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property, driving without a license, failure to stop for police, reckless operation, speeding and leaving the scene of an accident.
Investigators said the Taurus Millennium Pro handgun they recovered was reported stolen from Jacksonville, Fla., on June 17, 2006.
Aparicio was first approached on Blue Hill Avenue in Grove Hall by police investigating a report of a man with a gun. They said Aparicio let go of the bystander only after he threw the gun into the Nissan and jumped into the driver's seat as a rear passenger fled for his life.
After ditching the car and trying to evade capture on foot, police said Aparicio broke his left leg and ankle jumping off a wall.
