COLD SPRING HARBOR, N.Y. (AP) -- A man was rescued from his sport utility vehicle after it somehow ended up in a Long Island harbor.
Police say 35-year-old Leone James Jr. couldn't explain how his SUV got into the water at Billy Joel Cold Spring Harbor Park Sunday night. They say he was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
Police say off-duty emergency medical technician Scott Kitograd spotted the man's SUV -- with boat and trailer attached -- in the water about 8:55 p.m. and called 911.
They say responding Police Officer Tim Tonkin swam about 60-feet off the boat ramp and smashed one of the car's windows with his baton. Kitograd and Tonkin then pulled James to safety.
Both rescuers were treated for lacerations from the broken window.
