NEW HAVEN, Conn. - A New Haven police officer is to be paid $1.5 million in his lawsuit against the city over discipline for arresting two ministers.

The city has agreed to settle the lawsuit filed years ago.

Officer Arpad Tolnay had arrested the Revs. Armando Hernandez and Daniel Rodriguez in July 2002 after a complaint about a loud revival service at the Second Star of Jacob Church. The situation escalated when Hernandez refused to lower the music.

Tolnay was suspended for 10 days and transferred to a different assignment for seven months, but did not lose his job. Tolnay was also ordered to undergo sensitivity training.

The charges against the ministers were dismissed before they ever appeared in court. Mayor John DeStefano personally appeared at the church to apologize to the congregation.
