Conn. Gets Tough With Drivers On Cell Phones

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Greenwich police said they are surprised by the number of tickets they have issued to people caught using cell phones without hands-free devices while driving.

Greenwich has already issued 30 of the $100 tickets since the cell phone law took effect Oct. 1. Police said they are finding many violators when making vehicle stops for unrelated reasons.

State police are taking a different approach. They said they are giving out warnings in most cases to allow motorists to become familiar with the new law. State police have issued nine tickets, 23 written warnings and additional verbal warnings.

Connecticut is among three states and some cities that have banned the use of cell phones without hands-free devices while driving.

Police said cell phones are often cited in accident reports, but critics of the law say evidence that cell phones cause accidents is flimsy.
