A Cape Cod con has agreed to serve 9 1/2 years in federal prison for scamming people by stealing their identities - from behind bars.
Shawn Robert Pelley, 36, of Centerville, will be sentenced this afternoon by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper. Pelley pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Pelley is accused of using a recorded inmate phone at a county lockup to scam $120,000 out of a man's investment account two years ago, by obtaining a Florida driver's license in the victim's name to set up new accounts to deposit the money in and by hacking into his email and cutting off his phone service so he couldn't be notified of the transactions.
