ABINGTON (WBZ) ― An MBTA commuter train slammed into a car on the tracks in Abington Friday afternoon.

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo told WBZ it started when a driver tried to move his car around the crossing gate, which was down as the train approached.

"(He) got out of the car before it was struck by the train. He had no signs of physical injuries," Pesaturo said in an email.

The unidentified driver was taken to South Shore Hospital as a precaution. He will be cited for driving around the gate.

There were 30 passengers with the crew on the Kingston-Plymouth inbound train. No one was hurt.

Passengers were bused from South Weymouth to Braintree while the accident scene was cleared.
