DENVER --
A Thornton police officer was attacked while arresting a man for trespassing Saturday morning.
Police said the officer was at the Hunters Glen Marina Park, an area known for vandalism and graffiti, when he came across a group of men and women trespassing in the park.
The officer arrested one of the men and was walking him to a patrol car when the officer was attacked from behind by another person, said Matt Barnes of the Thornton Police Department.
"The officer was knocked to the ground and was repeatedly assaulted and kicked by both suspects," Barnes said.
The group ran away, but police said they were able to track them to the Pinnacle at Hunters Glen Apartment complex.
Police entered the apartment and found the man in handcuffs and the other man who assaulted the officer. Both were arrested, Barnes said.
Todd Ian Valdez, 24, of Broomfield, and Kevin James Romero, 20, of Denver, were both charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, second-degree criminal trespassing and resisting arrest, he said.
The officer was taken to North Suburban Medical Center and treated for minor cuts and abrasions.
