WINK News has learned that the officer is 24-year-old James Perrine of North Port.

He was flown to Lee Memorial Hospital after he was hit on I-75 around 12:30 a.m. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Perrine suffered many broken bones and is in serious condition this morning.

The accident happened at mile marker 166 on I-75 when Perrine was the first officer to drive upon the scene of an accident. According to FHP, Perrine got out to assist the driver of a car that had slammed into the guard wall on the Peace River Bridge. That's when a pick-up barreled toward them.

Officer Perrine tried to run, but the truck hit him after rear-ending the car.

The driver of the car is 34-year-old Gerald Gaudlap Junior of Cape Coral, who was treated for minor injuries at Charlotte Regional Medical Center.

This morning authorities are searching for the driver who fled the scene. The vehicle was a dark-colored Chevy pick-up with damage to the front end consistent with hitting a pedestrian.
