A Weymouth man hired to clean a South Shore Plaza store had apparently been going home with an assortment of merchandise stolen from businesses at the mall, police said.
Police arrested Roberto C. Barbosa, 40, on Wednesday after officers responded to a burglar alarm at the plaza's Urban Behavior store.
When officer Robert Chin arrived at about 7:40 a.m., he found the rear door open and Barbosa inside, police said.
Barbosa claimed to be a cleaner but ran out the rear door with Chin in pursuit, police said.
Police said Barbosa ran to the north parking garage and down stairs before Chin was able to catch him.
Chin later learned that Barbosa was a cleaner at Debbie's Pet Land, also at the plaza. The Debbie's manager confirmed that Barbosa and his wife cleaned the store, police said.
After police found Barbosa's vehicle parked in the north garage, they spotted two large black trash bags stuffed with clothing from Urban Behavior.
A similar trash bag half-filled with clothing was found in the store.
Police said Barbosa had more than $2,600 worth of stolen clothing.
Barbosa's wife told officers that there was additional clothing and merchandise at her home.
Detectives went to the home and recovered several thousand dollars worth of clothing and other items that had been taken from several plaza stores, including Banana Republic and Abercrombie and Fitch.
Barbosa is charged with breaking and entering, larceny from a building and receiving stolen property.
