NEW BEDFORD - A city teen who was shot during a May festival in Brooklawn Park was wounded again early Monday morning in the North End.
Police said Vernon T. Carter, 19, was shot in the back while walking in the area of Adams and Coggeshall streets just before 2 a.m.
Mr. Carter, who had called 911 to report the shooting, was treated at the scene and transported to Rhode Island Hospital, New Bedford police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey P. Silva said.
His injuries were not deemed life-threatening, and he was in stable condition later Monday, according to police.
Lt. Silva said it was unclear who shot Mr. Carter or why.
"The investigation is ongoing," he said. "Detectives are trying to interview witnesses as we speak."
Lt. Silva said it would be speculative to say whether there is a link between Monday's shooting and the May 17 shooting during the North End Businessmen's Festival at Brooklawn Park in which Mr. Carter was shot in the right forearm.
"We're still investigating the motive of the shootings," he said.
Lt. Silva said Mr. Carter has known gang affiliations. Since he was shot in May, Mr. Carter has been arrested four times on charges that include assault and battery, disturbing the peace and trespassing.
"Obviously, he's someone who's known to us," Lt. Silva said.
