Fall River -

Police responded to a reported assault and battery Monday afternoon on Third Street and later charged a city man with rape.
Vincent E. Shelton, 40, of 122 John St., was being held in the house of correction on $2,000 cash bail, following his arraignment Tuesday in District Court, according to police and court officials.
A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Dec. 18 on charges of rape and assault and battery.
Police would give out no other information about the case.
Police spokesman Detective Sgt. Thomas Mauretti said the lack of details was to protect the victim and has been his department policy with sex crimes. He would only provide the suspect's name and the charges.
The police incident report said authorities responded to a Third Street address about 3:45 p.m. It noted a response to St. Anne's Hospital and that several officers, directed by Sgt. Daniel J. Ahaesy, remained on the scene for up to six hours.
Mauretti declined to say if the victim was taken to St. Anne's.
