NEW BEDFORD - Police arrested a city man and charged him in connection with a gunpoint robbery Sunday night in the South End.
Jamaal Pina, 24, of 95 Richmond St., allegedly pointed a silver handgun and robbed three women outside the Vasco de Gama Restaurant on Dartmouth Street just after 10:45 p.m. Sunday, court records said.
He was arraigned Monday on charges that include armed robbery with a firearm while masked, assault by a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of ammunition and unlawful possession of cocaine.
Police arrested Mr. Pina at his Richmond Street residence after finding a vehicle there that the victims had reported seeing the suspect inside minutes before the robbery.
The victims told police they were outside the restaurant smoking when the suspect approached, pointed a handgun and demanded their cell phones and cash, court records said.
The suspect wore a gray hooded sweatshirt and had a black do-rag covering his face. He was accompanied by a thin Hispanic woman who wore a white hooded sweatshirt, court records said.
The victims surrendered their money and were not hurt. They gave police the license plate number of the car that they had seen the suspect inside before they were approached, court records said.
Police tracked the vehicle to Mr. Pina's residence. Inside the apartment, they found clothes matching the victims' description, court records said.
Police also found cash stuffed inside a pillowcase, a silver handgun inside a closet, ammunition, and a small amount of suspected cocaine, court records said.
The female suspect was not arrested. Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.
