NEW BEDFORD - Police arrested a city man in a shooting Sunday night outside Sapatinas on Acushnet Avenue.
Vincent Phinizy, 23, was arraigned Monday on charges that included discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and armed assault to murder.
The defendant was ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing in New Bedford District Court.
New Bedford police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey P. Silva said police responded to a report of shots fired at School Street and Acushnet Avenue late Sunday.
The shooting occurred after an argument in a parking lot outside Sapatinas bar.
A man was shot in the leg and transported to Rhode Island Hospital. The victim's injuries are not life-threatening, police said.
A vehicle was also struck by the gunfire.
While responding to the incident, police received a description of the suspect that said he was a dark-skinned man with bushy hair wearing blue jeans and a white shirt.
Police saw Mr. Phinizy, who matched the description, walking in the area and talking to an unidentified man. The defendant allegedly entered a vehicle when he saw police, Lt. Silva said.
Mr. Phinizy was arrested after witnesses identified him as the suspect, police said.
