SAN DIEGO (AP) - A Chinese woman who lived in Stamford, Connecticut, is set to be sentenced in a California courtroom for trying to buy military equipment and export it to her home country.
Qing Li faces up to five years in prison when she is sentenced today in San Diego federal court.
Authorities say she tried to buy sensors made by a California company that are commonly used to gauge the power of nuclear explosions. She was arrested last year at Kennedy International Airport in New York as she checked in for a flight to Beijing.
Officials say Li worked with a co-conspirator in China and sought to buy dozens of the $2,500 devices for a state-run agency in China. The scheme was revealed in e-mails Li sent to an undercover U.S. federal agent.
Li, a legal resident, pleaded guilty in June.
