Chelmsford Patrol Officer Sean F. Swift died unexpectedly at his Methuen home Monday.
Swift, a 10-year veteran on the Chelmsford force, earned a reputation of being fair and compassionate when on the job, said Police Chief Jim Murphy.
"There are letters in his file from the cases he worked," said Murphy. "He knew the job."
Murphy said Swift was well liked among his peers on the 4 p.m. to midnight shift.
"He was jovial and liked to have fun," said Murphy.
After graduating from the Lowell Police Academy in 1998, Swift joined the Chelmsford force.
In an earlier written statement, Murphy wrote, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Sean's family, relatives and friends during these difficult times. He will be sorely missed by his police family at CPD."
Swift, 38, was the husband of Kimberly (Meagher) Swift.
His survivors include his wife, Kim and his daughter, Laci of Methuen; his mother, Donna and her husband, Thomas Boland of Litchfield; and his father, James of Oregon.
He was the father of the late Madison Swift who died in 2007.
A memorial visitation service will be held on Sunday, Sept. 14, from 3 until 7 p.m.
Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at the McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland St., Lowell. The service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 200 Gorham St., Lowell, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to the Laci Swift Fund, c/o Lowell 5 Savings Bank, 34 John St., Lowell, MA 01852.

METHUEN Sean F. Swift, 38, died unexpectedly, Monday, September 8, 2008. He was the husband of Kimberly (Meagher) Swift.
The son of Donna (Hamel) Boland of Litchfield, NH, and James Swift of Oregon, he was born February 24, 1970, in Methuen, and was educated in the Methuen and Londonderry <NOBR>school</NOBR> systems, graduating from Londonderry High School, Class of 1988. Sean then attended and graduated from the Police Academy in 1998, and has been a police officer for the Town of Chelmsford for over ten years. He was a wonderful husband and a proud father, and enjoyed spending time with his two beautiful daughters, and his loving wife who was his best friend.
His survivors include his wife, Kim and his daughter, Laci of Methuen; his mother, Donna and her husband, Thomas Boland of Litchfield; his father, James of Oregon; his grandmother, Mildred Swift of Wilmington; his brother, Ryan Boland and his wife, Kelley, of Haverhill; his sister, Kelly Russell and her husband, Jeff, of Londonderry; his uncle, Jack Swift and his wife, Nancy, of Byfield; his mother in law, Sandy Meagher of Lowell; his father in law, Thomas Meagher of Lowell; his brother in law, Brian Meagher of Lowell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.
Sean was the beloved and proud father of the late Madison Swift who brought immense joy to his life until her death in 2007, as well as the grandson of the late Butch Swift and the late Alfred and Bernadette Hamel.
