HINGHAM -
It's a problem around the country and the South Shore is no different - quick-working thieves swiping catalytic converters from cars.
Hingham and Norwell have joined the ranks of towns targeted by thieves who harvest the parts for the high cash value of their precious metal components.
In Hingham, three catalytic converters were stolen from commercial vehicles parked in a lot at the South Shore Industrial Park last week.
Norwell reported five of the parts stolen in the past week, also from commercial vehicles parked in industrial center lots.
Police say thieves can remove the part in a matter of seconds and trade it at a salvage yard for between $50 to $100.
The parts are desired for their small amounts of high priced metals including platinum, palladium and rhodium.
Thieves typically target vehicles that are set high off the ground such as SUVs and pickup trucks. Since it is impossible to trace the part, cases of catalytic converter theft are difficult to solve short of catching the thief in the act
