NEW BEDFORD - An accident that led to another just across a median and a suspected drunken driver who fled the scene of an unrelated third accident kept local authorities busy Saturday evening.
First, an emergency vehicle responding to a rollover accident Saturday afternoon on Route 18 southbound was rear-ended by a car traveling northbound, a second accident resulting.
Both accidents resulted in minor or no injuries, according to the State Police in Dartmouth.
In the first accident around 5:20 p.m., a Chevrolet S-10 Blazer struck a guardrail and rolled over just north of Route 6, police said.
Two occupants were in the vehicle and escaped with minor injuries. Police cited the driver for speeding and a marked lane violation.
The driver's identity wasn't available Saturday night.
The accident forced closing of the ramp from Interstate 195 east to Route 18 for some time.
Meanwhile, while New Bedford rescue crews were at the scene, a Plymouth Acclaim traveling northbound on Route 18 rear-ended a fire truck stopped in the high-speed lane, police said.
The female driver suffered no injuries. Her identity wasn't available Saturday night.
Later in the evening, at around 8:50 p.m., state police arrested a man involved in a single-car accident on the ramp from Route 140 south to I-195 who ran into the woods after crashing, police said.
Police used canine units to search for the man, who was apprehended and charged with driving under the influence, police said. The driver's identity wasn't available Saturday night.
