Serious Delays Reported On Commuter Rail Lines

SALEM (WBZ) ― Commuters are experiencing significant delays in Salem after a train collided with a car at the Salem Depot Train Stop near Bridge Street.

The accident, which happened around 5:30 Monday night, is affecting the Newburyport and Rockport lines of the MBTA Commuter Rail.

The driver of the car is said to have minor injuries. Salem police tell WBZ he may have gotten confused and drove right into the tunnel.

So far it appears no one on the train was hurt.

Shuttle buses are transporting commuters between Lynn and Beverly stations.

Driver dies after collision with MA commuter train

Associated Press - November 3, 2008 8:54 PM ET

SALEM, Mass. (AP) - Officials say a 76-year-old Peabody man has died after the car he drove into a Salem train tunnel was struck by a commuter train. There were no injuries on the train.
MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the man got out of the car on his own and was conscious and alert at the scene and at a hospital, where he talked with investigators, but he later died. He said it's not clear if crash injuries caused the man's death. The driver's name was not released.
Pesaturo said the car was about 100 yards inside the tunnel at the Salem depot when it was struck by the northbound Rockport train at about 5:30 p.m. He said the train engineer braked when he saw the car's headlights.
Pesaturo said witnesses report the car traveled down the platform at the station before entering the tunnel.
