Ive seen em around here in Boston guarding liquor stores..... With a clamshell badge, that says in order from top to bottom… Constable, POLICE, City of Cambridge seal then Cambridge at the bottom. For the love of god can anyone explain to me if they are even a thing?
I’m not saying it’s the case here, but cities & towns that don’t have a special police statute will appoint store detectives & security guards as constables to give them arrest authority. Ditto for retired officers who want to work details.
I think its similar to what they do in Boston with the rule 400 special officers. Cambridge just calls them constables.
A little off topic but I was 495 southbound between 15-16, almost by the Wrentham outlets, and I saw a 2010ish Dodge Avenger, with CONSTABLE, all over it, a big sign in the rear window, stickers, and a hi-viz jacket with Constable lettering on the back. I’m sure I’m forgetting something too.. I wish I got a picture.
My favorite was someone i recognized working at Quincy Market. Standing inside one of the stores wearing dark blues full gun belt, but no patches . . . . Turns out he was a constable trying to give the illusion of being a police officer. Really nice kid . Hope he finally got a real job
How did you resist the urge to go up to him and something like "Oh don't you look cute. My son likes to dress up like a cop too, but his costume isn't as nice"?
Couldn't tell if it had Mass. tags. If it's got NH plates could be a volunteer fire fighter ( they run blue lights in their P/V ) May be this guys loophole ?
They’re required to have a blue light permit issued by the RMV, otherwise it’s a $300 civil infraction under 90-7E.
