California Sheriff's Deputy Dies Following Crash
LAKEPORT, California -- A Lake County sheriff’s deputy died after crashing his patrol vehicle into a tree Tuesday night in Lakeport, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Robert Rumfelt, 50, was working in Lakeport and driving on Hartley Road when he drove off the roadway and hit the tree. He was taken to Sutter Lakeside Hospital and died from his injuries. Officials said the deputy apparently suffered a medical emergency just prior to crashing.

Rumfelt, known as “Rob,” was a lifelong Lake County resident. He was sworn in as a Lakeport police officer in 1997, then left law enforcement in 2006 to work overseas as a private contractor teaching law enforcement tactics, according to a news release on the death.
