SPRINGFIELD - Springfield police, responding to a burglar alarm at the Spanish American Union on Main Street this morning, spotted a rental truck driving erratically while they were enroute and gave chase.

The suspect, driving a U-Haul, led police on a chase through side streets in the North End before stopping at Cumberland and Dwight streets and fleeing on foot, Sgt. Brian P. Manley said.

Police followed the suspect, 42-year-old Efrain Rodriguez, into 36 Harriet St. where they caught him attempting to kick in the door of a 4th floor apartment, Manley said.

After the arrest, police determined that the suspect had broken into a storefront church at 2530 Main St. which is a few doors down from the Spanish American Union.

A man who had been staying inside that church told police the suspect had broken into the building and then fled when confronted.

Police are attempting to determine if the suspect had also attempted to break into the Spanish American Union which is at 2335 Main, Manley said.
Rodriguez, of 33 Jenness St., was charged with breaking and entering, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police and operating a vehicle without a license, according to police documents.

The suspect was arrested shortly before 5 a.m.
