BUFFALO, N.Y. - Police in Buffalo say an off-duty officer shot and killed a man who was robbing him at gunpoint at a gas station.

The shooting victim was pronounced dead on arrival at a Buffalo hospital around 3 a.m. Friday. Authorities are using fingerprints to try to identify him. Police think he was in his late teens or 20s.

The 26-year-old officer, meanwhile, is on administrative leave under departmental policy.

Police spokesman Michael DeGeorge says a preliminary internal investigation found that the shooting was justified.

The off-duty officer was apparently outside the gas station, perhaps paying at a security window, when the alleged robbery attempt occurred.

Police have not released any other details.
