BROCKTON -
Police were able to reach out and arrest four robbery suspects thanks to a lost cell phone.
The suspects were arrested after investigators were able to track one of them through a cell phone left behind during the street robbery, Lt. John Crowley, chief of detectives, said.
Detectives David Delahoy and George Almeida called at least one of the contacts on the cell phone and posed as a Good Samaritan who found it. Saying they wanted to return it, the detectives asked where to find the owner, Crowley said.
"They were told he is probably sitting in the back of a house on Winter Street," Crowley said.
When police went there, officers found not one but four of the suspects in the robbery, he said.
Raeshawn Smith, 22, of Kevin Road, Brockton; Ernest Brocktington, 21, of Lester Road, Brockton; Anthony Scott, 23, of Kevin Road; and Shean Bell, 18, of Jordan Street, Brockton, wre charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a shod foot, and unarmed robbery.
The charges stem from the robbery of two men on Melrose Street shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday.
Crowley said two men and a woman told authorities a group of men walked up to them and one asked for a cigarette. The group then began to attack the two men while the woman ran to a nearby car and locked the doors, Crowley said.
The suspects fled with $4 but one left behind his cell phone.
