A Brockton man was charged today in federal court with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
According to the office of U.S. Attorney Michael J. Sullivan and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Boston, Jarreau Pelote, 24, of 162 Warren Ave., Room 34, Brockton was charged in a indictment with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The indictment alleges that on Aug. 14, the Brockton Police Department Narcotics Unit found a Cobra .380-caliber pistol, with obliterated serial number and seven rounds of ammunition, in Pelote's Warren Avenue apartment.
If convicted on these charges, he faces up to life imprisonment, to be followed by up to three years of supervised release and a $500,000 fine.
The crimes that led to Pelote's felon status were not disclosed.
According to Enterprise files, Pelote was arrested on Aug. 14 after detectives raided his apartment with a search warrant. Narcotics detectives found the gun, $1,600 and 6.5 grams of crack cocaine in the apartment, Brockton police said after the arrest.
