Title: Police Officer
Department: Police Department
Position Goal:
Responsible for the enforcement of laws and ordinances, crime prevention, and the protection of life and property; work may require the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions and may involve extreme mental and physical exertion for usually short periods of time.
Primary Duties:
Patrols assigned area in vehicle or on foot vigilantly observing and analyzing information about criminal activity and other areas of need; uses discretion in taking action as a result of this information; while on patrol responds to calls for police assistance; arrives at the scene of a crime or accident, assists or attends to victims, secures the scene of crime, and may be required to collect and preserve evidence; provides first aid at the scene of an emergency; assesses dangerous situations, evaluates alternative courses of action, and acts decisively to protect self and others from harm and property from damage; gathers and evaluates information required for oral and written reports; properly completes reports using correct terminology in logical order; enforces traffic regulations, State Statutes and Town Ordinances; facilitates flow of traffic by identifying pedestrian and vehicular irregularities giving information and assistance, follows departmental procedures and attends to the constitutional rights of prisoners in booking and incarcerating them; prepares reports and orally presents information, responds to questions in court; performs duties relating to controlling and protecting crowds, and equipment or property at scene where persons congregate; maintains effective interpersonal relations with members of the community in the criminal and non-criminal service areas; makes referrals to social service agencies when necessary; may be assigned to front desk to perform administrative functions; will be required to attend departmental and other training programs; will be familiar with policies, procedures, laws, etc., relating to proper performance of duties; will be familiar with court procedures; will be required to become proficient in use of firearms; performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Must demonstrate the ability to follow written and oral instructions; observe and accurately report details; write clear and concise reports; recall information; comprehend and retain factual information; clearly and concisely communicate ideas; deal effectively and fairly with all segments of society; perform basic mathematical computations; have basic knowledge of laws and ordinances.
Supervised By:
Works under immediate supervision of a superior in the Police Department who issues instructions and reviews work for conformance to orders and instructions.

We are accepting applications for Police Officer testing to establish an eligibility list for filling future vacancies. Testing includes: Written, Oral, Physical Ability, Background Investigation, Psychological, Polygraph & Physical Exam. Qualifications: H.S. grad or GED equiv & satisfactory completion of Police Academy after appointment. (Must be 21 yrs of age to attend Academy) Valid CT drivers lic required.
