WEYMOUTH -
Police are searching for a man who attacked a Braintree man with a glass in a Weymouth bar, badly cutting his face and possibly causing damage to his eye.
Lt. Joseph Comperchio said police do not yet have a suspect in the attack, which occurred about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Main Street Grille on Main Street (Route 18).
Comperchio said police are following several leads.
The victim, Robert Baker, 25, was cut under the eye and the across the nose. When officers arrived they found him in his vehicle, Comperchio said.
A friend of Baker, who declined to be identified, said the injury to Baker's eye threatens his vision and that he needed extensive surgery.
Baker's medical condition was not made public. The friend said Baker was taken from South Shore Hospital to Boston Medical Center, but a spokeswoman for Boston Medical Center said Friday they were not treating him.
Comperchio said witnesses told police they saw Baker's assailant drive away from the scene in a black Dodge Ram pickup truck and had blood on his arm.
Comperchio said a fight broke out after Baker and the assailant were standing at the bar and the assailant began to complain about Baker backing into his "private space."
Chris Dimambro, a co-owner of Main Street Grille, said he did not get a long look at the assailant but knew he was not a regular at the establishment.
"It all happened very, very quickly," Dimambro said. "It was almost like a random thing. I didn't see the actual event, and it was just over before it started. We were more concerned with the victim, trying to take care of him."
